I filmen Master and Commander har de en dyre-/naturinteresseret læge med om bord, men kort efter de er ankommet til Galapagos øerne bliver kaptajnen (Russell Crowe) desværre nødt til at melde deres afgang væk fra dette Zoologiske Eldorado. Lægen der er noget frustreret, får følgende respons, da han henvender sig til kaptajnen:

Det er muligvis bare mig, men føler virkelig at lyrics'ne rammer stemningen og nogle af følelserne omkring misbrug af en meget seldestruktiv karakter.

Det er mit indtryk at "Hurt" ikke bare er en reflektion og anger over stofmisbruget konkret, men også er et udtryk for Reznor's følelser mod verden (og i høj grad mod sig selv) på det tidspunkt hvor han skrev "The Downward Spiral". Nummeret beskriver også øjeblikket hvor albummets hovedperson, efter at have skudt hovedet af sig selv, reflekterer over sit liv og sine bedrifter. Cash's genfortolkning har som følge af Johnny-drengens fortid et kraftigt fokus på kristus/stofmisbrugs-temaet, men som jeg ser det er det bare én måde at præsentere nummeret på.
Det fascinerende ved TDS og også til en vis grad Reznor's øvrige udgivelser er IMO hans evne til at opbygge en dyb musikalsk grundstemning og ovenpå bygge begivenheder og forløb der opererer på mange niveauer af forståelse.
