Social engineering (political science)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article is about attempts to influence popular behavior. For social engineering as it applies to manipulation of individuals, see Social engineering (computer security).
Social engineering is a concept in political science that refers to efforts to influence popular attitudes and social behavior on a large scale, whether by governments or private groups. In the political arena the counterpart of Social engineering is: Political engineering.
For various reasons, the term has been imbued with negative connotations. Virtually all law and governance has the effect of changing behavior and can be considered "social engineering" to some extent. Prohibitions on murder, rape, suicide and littering are all policies aimed at discouraging perceived undesirable behaviors. In British and Canadian jurisprudence, changing public attitudes about a behaviour is accepted as one of the key functioning of laws prohibiting it. Governments also influence behavior more subtly through incentives and disincentives built into economic policy and tax policy, for instance, and have done so for centuries.
In practice, whether any specific policy is labeled as "social engineering" is often a question of intent. The term is most often employed by the political right as an accusation against any who propose to use law, tax policy, or other kinds of state influence to change existing power relationships: for instance, between men and women, or between different ethnic groups. Political conservatives in the United States have accused their opponents of social engineering through their promotion of political correctness, insofar as it may change social attitudes by defining "acceptable" and "unacceptable" language or acts.

Anatomy
In the context of joints, manipulation is the skilled passive movement of a joint that is applied at varying speeds and amplitudes, including a small-amplitude/high velocity therapeutic movement or thrust. It can also refer to the process of bringing fragments of fractured bone or displaced joints into normal anatomical alignment (otherwise known as 'setting' the bone).
Manipulation does not imply specificity or the correction of the chiropractic subluxation, and therefore is not entirely synonymous with the chiropractic adjustment.
Social influence
Main article: Social influence
In a psychological context, manipulation means to influence a person or a group of people in such a way that the manipulator tries to get what he or she wants or makes a person believe something in a calculating, indirect and somewhat dishonest way. Like indoctrination, it is a form of psychological abuse.
For example, a manipulator will
* use arguments that the manipulator does not believe in himself
* or withhold or distort relevant information,
* or provide false information (disinformation)
* or "play" on the emotions of the person.
* physically move the person, like a puppet
This might also involve propaganda when it is directed to more than one person.
Magic
Manipulation can also refer to sleight of hand tricks in magic or XCM.
Finance
Market manipulation is when a person seeks to distort the prices of financial instruments or effect transactions in a manner which gives or is likely to give false signals or misleading information.
