Over the last few years I've noticed an increase in people wanting to source and grow the 'Tasmanian' strain of poppy. After reading of yet another recent death I think it's time to educate people that these aren't recreational and will kill you if used. There's also Two types of
P. somniferum being called 'Tasmanian'. I hope to clarify this.
The poppy grown by farmers in Tasmania, Australia is not like the traditional
Papaver somniferum grown by home gardeners, it's a mutated form selectively bred to produce no morphine. The lack of morphine has led this strain to be called 'Norman' by the growers. Norman was derived from a play on words from the words: no morphine. Instead they produce the alkaloids codeine, thebaine and oripavine which are then turned into other drugs like oxycodone, buprenorphine etc.
Wiki links on both of these alkaloids:
ThebaineOripavineOne of these can cause convulsions leading to death, and the other is toxic. Do we now see why these aren't for recreational purposes?
Now, there is a 'Tasmanian' strain that is ok and has been grown and used with no problems by myself and probably over a thousand+ others. The flower of this strain has Red petals with Black petal bases, like this:

The pharmaceutical 'Tasmanian' poppy or 'Norman' as I will call them from now on is vastly different. They have mostly White petals, sometimes with a hint of Lilac but have purple/Dark Lilac petal bases, like this:

I hope this post can at the least educate people on the differences. The ultimate goal would be to prevent a death from using these poppies. I believe in free choice and utilising any substance a person wishes, but when people are dying through poor information or misinformation, the facts need to presented and put out there to let people know of the dangers.
